MixPeeps.com - Social Media Site UX Program Direction, Creative Design, User Research, Leadership & Development
MixPeeps.com
MixPeeps.com is the first-ever, comprehensive, online community of its type; wholly devoted to and specifically focused on information, education and connecting the mixed race community.

The primary mission of MixPeeps is to empower mixed heritage people and bring them together in a common and easy manner. Despite ongoing improvements, mixed race individuals remain largely invisible in school curriculums, on health forms, and in corporate diversity programs, while racial profiling and other challenges continue to occur daily.

MixPeeps, through its community, provides resources for families, educators, health care professionals, sports professionals, and political leaders to better meet the needs of this constantly expanding community. Through this medium MixPeeps addresses and informs on the very complex issues impacting multiracial people and communities everyday.

Community focus is just the beginning of what makes MixPeeps different though. Profiles on MixPeeps feature heritage information, self-identification and racial mix data that bring together like-minded folks, directly supporting its primary mission of connection and empowerment. MixPeeps users all share a common bond of mixed ethnicity of some kind, and the name, MixPeeps, is exactly what the site represents; mixed people coming together.

Employing a pragmatic marketing approach, this website and all relating supporting structures were created after target-market research indicated a gap in the area of mix-race specific social communities, opportunities for connection, education and information sharing.

Market data combined with documented trends in social media usage, proved that this product would not only be useful and highly valuable for its target audience, but also timely in its placement.

MixPeeps Basic Flow
Initial concepts were wire-framed and reviewed internally.  Concepts were then tested with target consumers and vetted to a single design which was prototyped and placed into the iterative discovery testing process.

Potential users were recruited to perform concept, preference, click and task-based testing as the design evolved. Between testing rounds, iterations were made on the design based upon outcomes until the go-to-market design was achieved. The prototype was then moved to the implementation stage.

All user experience research, design and development was performed by myself.  This included everything from foundational user research and discovery testing to logo design, color palette selection, and look and feel as well as help systems, administrative alerts and response mechanisms via kanban integration, platform selection and code development from instantiation through deployment.

MixPeeps incorporates a patent-pending, robust and extensive race-mix self-identification methodology that exists only on the site itself.  This methodology, researched and designed by myself, comprises over 50, easily selected dimensions, and its core data is incorporated into a data visualization that appears on each site member's profile.

The entire site was created to be 100% responsive with break-points included based upon visitor viewport sizing making it accessible across all device types from desktop to tablet to phone.

Device specific versions of the site were also created for both iOS and Android and are available in both the Google Play and iOS App store.

Since launch of the website and related device specific platforms, it has continually gained organic search traffic and signups, provided the parent company with a one-of-a-kind social media platform connecting the mixed race community, and created a space for persons of mixed heritage to find and share information and opportunities.
